Marlins Add Ryan Weathers From Padres For Garrett Cooper, Sean Reynolds

In the final flurry of deadline-day deals, the Marlins continued to buttress their big league roster by adding lefty Ryan Weathers from San Diego in exchange for first baseman Garrett Cooper and righty relief prospect Sean Reynolds.

Ryan Weathers, LHP
Age: 23
Weathers was San Diego’s first-round pick in the 2018 draft and made his big league debut in the 2020 National League Division Series. Since then, he’s bounced back and forth between Triple-A and the big leagues, spending time at both spots in each of the last three seasons. This year, he’s made 12 appearances with the Padres. He works with a mix of a mid-90s four-seam fastball, a mid-80s changeup and a low-80s sweeper. He has struggled to find the strike zone this season, and the strikes he has thrown have often gotten hit.

PADRES ACQUIRE

Garrett Cooper, 1B
Age: 32
Cooper made his big league debut with the Yankees in 2017 and then was dealt to the Marlins, where he’s played for the duration of his career. At his best, he brings righthanded power that can play against lefthanders. He still hits the ball fairly hard and finds the barrel often, but has chased far too often this season.

Sean Reynolds, RHP
Age: 25
Reynolds was the Marlins’ fourth-round pick in 2016. At the time, he was a position player. He converted to pitching in 2021 and quickly made use of a mid-90s fastball that has helped him strike out nearly 11 hitters per nine innings over the past three seasons. He backs it up with a high-80s curveball and a changeup in roughly the same range. Reynolds was called up to the big leagues but never got into a game before being sent back down to Triple-A Jacksonville, where he’s struck out 17 and walked seven in 18 innings this season. He has the ceiling of a middle reliever.
