Salas Could Be Special

When Ethan Salas arrived in the California League on May 30, he immediately displayed talent well beyond his years.

The Padres assigned Salas to Low-A Lake Elsinore this season when he was just 16 years old, making him the first player that age to appear in the full-season minor leagues since Julio Urias in 2013.

Salas, who signed in January and bypassed Rookie ball entirely, reached base in seven of his first eight plate appearances, turned 17 two days after his arrival and never slowed down.

Salas hit .267/.350/.487 with nine home runs and 35 RBIs in 48 games for Lake Elsinore before earning a promotion to High-A Fort Wayne—and eventually Double-A San Antonio in late August.

Beyond the numbers, the Venezuelan catcher showed an uncanny knowledge of the strike zone and remarkable poise in the batter’s box that belied his youth.

Salas laid off tantalizingly close pitches, worked counts like a season veteran and made consistent contact with a direct, fluid, lefthanded swing.

After hitting into some bad luck early, Salas hit .312/.359/.633 with eight home runs in his final 26 games with the Storm before being promoted.

“At 17 you’re usually writing a high school follow report on a guy,” one rival evaluator said. “I haven’t seen a newly-turned 17-year-old in full-season who really looks like he belongs.

“He’s taking 97 (mph) up in the zone and just crushed it for a home run. He’s got a chance to be pretty damn good.”

Salas understandably still needs to add strength, especially to withstand the rigors of catching. But for a player his age to excel as he did in the California League, he showed he’s already on the path to becoming a special player.

Massive Power Helps Isaac Stand Out

The Rays surprised the industry in 2022 by taking hulking high school first baseman Xavier Isaac in the first round.

So far, the 19-year-old has rewarded their hunch.

The winner of the Best Power category in the Carolina League, Isaac is a big, physical lefthanded hitter with the thump to match. At the time of his promotion to High-A, Isaac ranked third in the CL in home runs (13), second in slugging (.462) and second in OPS (.462).

More than simply power, Isaac has impressed scouts with an advanced approach that led to a walk rate of nearly 15% in the Carolina League.

Isaac’s raw power showed up in his exit velocity numbers, with a 90th percentile mark that hovered around 108 mph and a maximum of better than 114 mph.

As a first base-only prospect, Isaac is going to have to continue to mash like he did in the Carolina League to keep climbing the ladder. The biggest hole scouts see right now is in his platoon splits. He departed Low-A hitting just .192/.337/.288 against southpaws and hadn’t connected for a home run against a lefty all season.

Isaac’s strikeout rate against lefties in the CL was high but not outlandish at 26.8% and he still worked plenty of walks (nearly an 18% rate), but there’s still plenty of work to be done to make Isaac a threat against both righties and lefties.

Nonetheless, Isaac’s massive power should make him an asset as he rises through the minor leagues.

Basallo’s Bat Dominates Older Competition

After years of absence in the international market, the Orioles under Mike Elias have begun to reestablish themselves in the space in recent years.

Their first hit looks to be 19-year-old catcher Samuel Basallo. Signed for $1.3 million out of the Dominican Republic in January 2021, Basallo was assigned to Low-A Delmarva out of spring training after a solid U.S. debut in the Florida Complex League last year.

In 83 games with the Shorebirds Basallo hit .299/.384/.503 with 12 home runs. At the time of Basallo’s promotion to High-A Aberdeen, he ranked third in the Carolina League in batting average, fifth in on-base percentage, first in slugging and fourth in home runs.

The biggest difference year over year in Basallo’s game is his ability to impact the ball. While the lefthanded hitter hinted at his plus-plus raw power at times in complex ball, he didn’t consistently channel his strength into hard contact.

Compared with last year, Basallo added 5 mph to his average exit velocity and 3 mph to his 90th percentile exit velocity. This shows a real increase in not only high end contact quality but also consistency of quality contact.

Basallo still has some swing-and-miss, particularly in-zone, and will get overly aggressive and expand the zone. Despite these warts, Basallo dominated older competition in his first experience at the full-season level with plus power that may grow into double-plus and feel to hit.

Basallo has a strong combination of elite power and skills. His future behind the plate might be a question, but his bat carries enough weight to fit around the diamond.

Player Spotlight: Jacob Misiorowski

Jacob Misiorowski won Best Tools categories in three leagues this season.

Not bad for a Brewers 2022 second-round pick who walked seven of the 14 batters he faced in his pro debut last summer.

The 6-foot-7 Misiorowski still struggles with control, but his stuff is undeniable. He might have the best two-pitch combo in the minor leagues.

His high-90s fastball gets on hitters quickly from an unorthodox low arm slot and generates a high rate of swings and misses. The pitch is a 70 or 80 on the 20-80 scale for scouts.

Because Misiorowski can touch 101 mph, batters often look foolish when they’re gearing up for heat and get his high-80s slider.

He also throws a low-80s curveball that he can often locate to both sides of the plate and make up for a subpar changeup.

Locating pitches in the strike zone is often a 50/50 proposition for Misiorowski, and more advanced hitters will go out of the zone less often than young ones.

Combined with Misiorowski’s long arm action, that leads many scouts to project the 21-year-old to the bullpen, where he could quickly become a premier closer.

Prospect Showdown: Cole Young vs. Jett Williams

The 2022 draft was rich in high school shortstop talent. Jackson Holliday and Termarr Johnson were the first and fourth players selected. The Mets followed with Jett Williams at No. 14 and the Mariners with Cole Young at No. 21.

Both Williams and Young have the potential to become plus hitters, thanks in large part to discerning batting eyes. Each won Best Strike-Zone Judgment in his league.

While Williams and Young were in Low-A, they had nearly identical chase rates of roughly 17.5%. Young swung much more frequently (40% to 32%) and whiffed more often on pitches in the zone (18% to 14%). Williams, whose league used an ABS strike zone, worked deeper counts and had higher walk and strikeout rates.

Young   Williams

    45    POWER    40

    55    RUN    60

    50    FIELD    50

    55    ARM    50

What They’re Saying: Termarr Johnson, 2B, Pirates

“I think he’s gonna stay at second base. His lower half is getting really thick, but he has very good bat speed. Patient with a good eye. Ball jumps off his bat. He’s still really young, so that has to come into play.

“He has severe bat speed. Everyday player. You can tell he loves to play the game. Excellent enthusiasm. Defense is still a question. Thick frame but quick twitch.”

Holliday Takes Flight

Jackson Holliday began the season at Low-A Delmarva. He began the second half of the season at Double-A Bowie.

In the process, the 19-year-old Orioles shortstop became one of the major storylines of the 2023 minor league season.

Holliday won Best Tools categories in the High-A South Atlantic and Double-A Eastern leagues, including Best Batting Prospect and Most Exciting Player in both.

What makes Holliday stand out is his ability to hit for a high batting average and reach base at a high clip. His plate skills are plus-plus, and he shows innate bat-to-ball skills and the ability to hit a variety of pitches.

Holliday’s contact skills proved too much for pitchers in the lower minors. He hit .331/.466/.523 in 71 games at two Class A stops. He then handled Double-A pitchers with similar mastery.

The Orioles chose Holliday, the 2022 High School Player of the Year, with the first overall pick last year. His ability to adjust his barrel to take a variety of swings on the ball gives him the look of a contact-only hitter, but his power swing is capable of unleashing the occasional towering shot.

Holliday’s plate discipline is exceptional and likely the best of his many above-average to plus tools. He discerns balls and strikes as well as any player in the minors despite being a teenager.

His ability to get on base in a variety of ways and then steal bases earned him Most Exciting Player votes across multiple leagues.

Holliday stands as the top prospect in baseball and is a polished gem who may grow into more power as his body matures. He is a potential superstar in the making with bloodlines—father Matt was an MLB all-star; brother Ethan is one of the top draft prospects for 2025—to one of the game’s great baseball families.

Merrill Recovers From Slow Start To Shine

Jackson Merrill’s season got off to an inauspicious start in the Midwest League when he was sidelined by the flu and then again by a stomach bug shortly after. The 1-2 punch of illnesses sapped the Padres shortstop’s strength and energy so much that he struggled to get through games and even caused him to be pulled mid-game due to fatigue and nausea.

Once Merrill finally got healthy, the 20-year-old showed the extraordinary hitting talents that have come to define him. He hit .177 in April as he battled his illnesses and .309/.339/.475 the rest of the way at High-A Fort Wayne before being promoted to Double-A San Antonio.

Merrill hit lefties as well as righties, struck out just 12.3% of the time—the fifth-lowest rate in the MWL among batters who batted at least 300 times—and earned raves from coaches and evaluators alike for his mature demeanor and smooth, balanced lefthanded swing.

“He’s pretty damn good,” one American League pro scout said. “Very controlled, mellow presence. He has a smoothness to the game. He makes it look easy and hits the ball hard.”

Merrill’s bat alone makes him an excellent prospect, but that same smoothness and ease translates to his defense at shortstop. His steady glove, efficient movements and advanced instincts will give him every opportunity to remain at the position. If it all comes together, he has a chance to be the rare everyday shortstop who has a chance to compete for batting titles.

Small Changes Unlock Big Power For Ortiz

Abimelec Ortiz is one of a handful of nondrafted free agents who are already paying big dividends for the Rangers.

The physical, 6-foot first baseman signed out of Florida Southwestern State JC in 2021 and led the Dominican Summer League in home runs (11) and slugging percentage (.581) in his first professional season.

He equaled that home run total a year later with Low-A Down East, but he played in 53 additional games, making his power in the DSL look like a complex league mirage.

Between 2022 and 2023, however, things changed.

Most importantly, the 21-year-old Puerto Rico native was fitted for corrective lenses to improve his vision. He also cut down on his pre-pitch movement and exchanged a leg kick for a toe-tap. The results were striking.

Through Aug. 23 Ortiz was tied for the South Atlantic League lead with 23 home runs for Hickory—or one more than his total in the previous two seasons combined. That earned him the nod as Best Power Prospect in the SAL.

That total, plus the eight he hit in a return to Low-A to begin the year, gave him 30 homers, placing him four off the minor league lead and one off the lead among players without time in Triple-A, which began a week earlier than the other three full-season levels.

Scouts who saw Ortiz noted that the quality of his contact was much improved.

The lefthanded hitter is still vulnerable to elevated velocity, which contributed to his 29% strikeout rate, but a few changes have helped make him into one of Texas’ top power brokers.

—Josh Norris

Player Spotlight: Yanquiel Fernandez

Yanquiel Fernandez has some of the most exciting raw power in the minor leagues.

The 20-year-old Cuban showed out in the Northwest League this spring, hitting .319/.355/.605 with 17 home runs and 64 RBIs in 58 games. That earned him a quick promotion to Double-A Hartford.

Few players hit the ball as hard as often as Fernandez, who showed a near 91 mph average exit velocity in the Northwest Leauge, with max readings to match.

That helped make him one of the rare players to win Most Exciting Player based mostly on his power production—and also arm strength.

Most Exciting Player category winners typically combine plus offensive attributes with speed and defensive value.

But the 6-foot, 198-pound Fernandez is a below-average runner and below-average defender in right field whose lefthanded bat will have to carry him to major league relevancy.

Fernandez likes to swing the bat and has a tendency to chase out of the zone. If he can become more selectively aggressive, he has the potential to become an above-average hitter with at least plus power.

That would make him one of the more exciting hitters in MLB.

—Matt Eddy

Prospect Showdown: Zach Maxwell vs. Yilber Diaz

Two of the best fastballs in High-A belong to fireballing righthanders with very different body types in different roles. The Reds’ Zach Maxwell is a 6-foot-6, 275-pound behemoth who has worked as a reliever since he was at Georgia Tech. The D-backs’ Yilber Diaz is an undersized starter, so opponents get more looks at his fastball.

Each generates mid-to-high-90s velocity with above-average to plus ride. Maxwell’s fastball sits 96-97 mph with 19-20 inches of induced vertical break, generating whiffs at an elite rate. Diaz’s fastball doesn’t generate as much ride and it’s a few miles per hour slower but does have a flatter approach angle and more unique release characteristics than Maxwell’s.

What They’re Saying: Yu-Min Lin, LHP, D-backs

“He was delayed in his buildup out of spring training but has come out and looked great. The command, arsenal—he’s got like eight pitches. As he gets stronger and continues to develop, he could be special. His fastball is 90-92 (mph). You’ll see a 93. Changeup is his best pitch. Can manipulate and do different things with it.”

Chourio Gets In The Swing

The Brewers’ Jackson Chourio finished his breakthrough 2022 season at Double-A as an 18-year-old. No hitter that young had reached that high since Fernando Tatis Jr. in 2017 or Bryce Harper in 2011.

Chourio returned to Biloxi on Opening Day this year as the only 19-year-old at Double-A. The center fielder did not light the world on fire in the first half, hitting .249/.304/.410 with 11 home runs and a 21% strikeout rate in 71 games.

But not everything is as it seems.

The Southern League experimented with a pre-tacked baseball in the first half that gave pitchers a consistent grip on the ball. It had the effect of improving spin rate and command of breaking pitches and fastballs, especially riding four-seamers up in the zone.

The SL ditched the pre-tacked baseball when the second half began on July 14. In his first 30 games coming out of the break, Chourio batted .346/.401/.554 with six homers and 15% strikeouts.

Chourio’s batted-ball data was equally bullish. According to Synergy, he improved his swinging-strike and chase rates when the SL moved to a standard baseball in the second half. He also swung much less frequently overall.

Chourio saw his greatest gains against fastballs. His chase rate against them dropped from 33% to 21%. His swinging-strike rate improved slightly 18% to 17%. Most dramatic was his change in swing rate versus fastballs, which fell from 53% to 39%.

Most of Chourio’s improvement against fastballs occurred with heaters high in the zone—the pitch type on which pitchers received the biggest performance boost with the pre-tacked ball.

That’s great news for Chourio, whose five-tool center fielder projection looks better today than it did in the spring.

Tiedemann Balances Risk With Tantalizing Upside

Injuries annually rob fans of great performances. Blue Jays lefthander Ricky Tiedemann’s season falls within that category this season.

The 21-year-old flamethrower impressed Eastern League managers so much that he earned Best Pitching Prospect and Best Fastball despite missing all of May, June and July while sidelined with a biceps injury

No other pitcher flashed the moments of dominance that Tiedemann did when he was on the mound. While his results were up and down—he ran a 6.75 ERA through 18.2 innings for New Hampshire—no pitcher in the league could match his pure power.

Tiedemann sits 95-97 mph and mixes in a devastating plus-plus changeup and a plus sweeping slider. He can overpower hitters while controlling both sides of the plate when his command is locked in.

His ability to land three pitch shapes with unique traits and good separation off of his fastball makes Tiedemann a unique pitcher—but especially so as a lower-slot lefthander. Tiedemann possesses a premium mix of pure stuff, pitchability and deception that places him among the elite pitching prospects.

The concerns regarding his viability as a starter are very real. Tiedemann had not exceeded 70 pitches or four innings since July 8, 2022. His health and durability are major concerns, and he struggled with command this season upon returning from a biceps injury.

Still, Tiedemann’s potential as a high-risk, high-reward lefthander with ace upside is clear.

—Geoff Pontes

Precocious Perez Shoots To The Top

Marlins righthander Eury Perez began the season as one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. He eventually moved into the top spot and then spent two stints in MLB showing that the hype was very, very real.

As ever, the massive, 20-year-old Perez showcased a combination of high-end stuff and precocious athleticism. In concert, both of those traits added up to a pitcher able to dominate some of the finest hitters in the big leagues.

Perez made his big league debut on May 12 after six starts for Pensacola. He earned his first win a week later by spinning five one-run innings against the Nationals.

After electrifying the majors for 11 starts, Perez was sent back to Double-A for a month. Once he returned to Miami, he took two starts to find his groove again before he turned in the best outing of his career on Aug. 19.

Facing the Dodgers, Perez struck out 10 over six innings of two-hit, no-walk ball. The outing was his first as a big leaguer with double-digit strikeouts.

Perez is one of just 17 pitchers age 20 or younger to make at least 10 starts in a season in the past 30 years.

For the last two seasons, Perez has been lauded as one of the highest ceiling pitching prospects in baseball.

He proved it in 2022 with a standout turn as the youngest pitcher in the Southern League, then reaffirmed his stock with two more stints in Double-A in 2023. In both seasons, he was SL managers’ pick as Best Pitching Prospect.

Based on the results, hitters in the Southern League should be breathing a sigh of relief with the knowledge that Perez is finally gone for good.

—Josh Norris

Player Spotlight: Jordan Lawlar

D-backs shortstop Jordan Lawlar is one of the finest power-speed prospects in baseball.

In his time with Double-A Amarillo he hit .263/.366/.474 with 15 home runs and 33 stolen bases in 89 games.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing in the Texas League. Lawlar hit just .168 with 30% strikeouts through his first 34 games for Amarillo. His swing got out of whack and he tended to chase high fastballs

That adversity may have paid off in the long run for the 21-year-old Lawlar.

In his final 55 games in the Texas League he put up a .957 OPS with a strikeout rate just shy of 17%.

That made Lawlar a prime candidate for Most Exciting Player in the Texas League, which he won in Best Tools voting.

More surprising was Lawlar’s win for Best Defensive Shortstop.

He was a bit error-prone in his 2022 full-season debut—.912 fielding percentage—but shoring up his defensive work was a primary goal for Lawlar in 2023.

Mission accomplished.

Lawlar’s athletic ability and plus arm help him make highlight-reel plays. Now he has improved the consistency of his fundamentals to make routine plays with much greater frequency.

Prospect Showdown: James Wood vs. Owen Caissie

The Padres hit big on consecutive second-round picks, drafting Owen Caissie in 2020 and James Wood in 2021. Both were traded for marquee players—Caissie to the Cubs in the Yu Darvish deal and Wood to the Nationals in the Juan Soto deal—and have emerged as premier power prospects in their age-20 seasons at Double-A.

As for who has more power, Wood can hit balls farther, but Caissie gets to his power more frequently against better pitching. Both hit towering drives to the opposite field and center in addition to their pull side, and both regularly clear elite markers for exit velocity and home run distance.

From a pure tools standpoint, their power is roughly even. From a productivity standpoint, Caissie gets the edge. Either way, both Caissie and Wood are two of the best young power hitters in the minor leagues and are capable of hitting mesmerizing blasts at any time.

What They’re Saying: Evan Carter, OF, Rangers

“He’s obviously very interesting. Plus athlete. Plus runner. Can definitely stay in center field . . . He’s not quite physically mature yet and has strength gains to come.

“His swing is good. It’s just not coming off the bat real hot yet. He knows the strike zone and can manage an at-bat. It’s hit over power. He’s a good player.

A good leadoff profile.”

De La Cruz Electrifies IL

International League fans got an extended look at Elly De La Cruz before the 21-year-old Reds shortstop ever stepped foot on a major league field.

They saw why De La Cruz was going to become one of the most exciting players the minute he arrived in MLB.

De La Cruz showed off his speed by turning in the fastest home-to-third time (10.97 seconds) of any Triple-A player. He also swiped 11 bags to go with three triples in just 38 games for Louisville.

It was a big hint of how he would quickly turn in the three fastest home-to-third times on triples in the majors after receiving his callup on June 6.

At Triple-A he hit .298/.398/.633 with 12 home runs, while reining in his strikeout rate to 23% in his final 23 games, compared with 33% in his first 15.

De La Cruz’s power also was apparent. As of mid August, the hardest-hit ball in Triple-A or the majors was his 118.8 mph scorcher of a double on May 9 against Columbus. He also has the hardest-hit home run in Triple-A, a 450-foot blast that traveled at 117.7 mph.

And his arm was just as obvious. De La Cruz had a pair of 99 mph throws on infield assists—one as a shortstop and one as a third baseman—that remain the hardest throws tracked by Statcast on an infield out this season.

De La Cruz has shown 80-grade speed and arm strength—his raw power also has a case for 80—since he arrived in the majors. Triple-A fans can say they got to see it all first.

Williams’ Power Arsenal Leads The Way

In the opening months of the International League season, the Columbus rotation provided a window to some of the top rookie pitchers 2023 would have to offer.

By the end of April, the Clippers had already received starts from righthanders Gavin Williams and Tanner Bibee and lefthander Logan T. Allen.

Bibee and Allen made their MLB debuts in April. Williams followed in June after making nine starts for Columbus.

All three pitched so effectively for Cleveland that club was able to weather the trade of Aaron Civale and injuries to Shane Bieber, Triston McKenzie and Cal Quantrill. Guardians starters had a 3.98 ERA that ranked seventh-best in MLB.

The 24-year-old Williams, Cleveland’s first-round pick in 2021, entered the season as the top prospect of the bunch and has an impressive arsenal built on firepower and a variety of pitch shapes.

His four-seam fastball sits 94-97 mph with heavy bore and generates average ride and above-average run, making it a truly gnarly bat-missing weapon. It generated an above-average whiff rate almost immediately.

In an IL season that boasted some strong Best Fastball candidates, Williams stood above the rest. It’s not just shape and velocity, but his ability to hold his stuff and locate with consistency.

Aside from his fastball, Williams can turn to two breaking pitches—a mid-70s curveball and a tighter, mid-80s slider—as well as a changeup.

An imposing 6-foot-6, Williams gets down the mound with power and force while mixing a variety of pitch shapes at different velocities. He has the body, pitch mix and power of a potential front-of-the-rotation starter and as a rookie  had begun to show signs of future dominance.

—Geoff Pontes

Harrison Has The Stuff, Now He Needs Cohesion

“Divisive” might be the perfect word to encapsulate the prospect status of Giants lefthander Kyle Harrison.

For those appreciative of big stuff and swing-and-miss abilities, Harrison rates highly.

For those who favor efficiency and command, the 22-year-old might seem overrated.

Harrison spent most of the season with Sacramento, reaching MLB for his debut on Aug. 22, when he went 3.2 innings against the Phillies. He made good progress for a 2020 third-rounder out of high school.

While in the Pacific Coast League, Harrison struck out nearly 35.6% of batters, the highest rate in the league at 50 innings. But his command was an issue.

Harrison walked 16.3% of batters—the third-worst mark in the PCL—and reached five innings only once in 20 starts. He topped 80 pitches three times.

Harrison’s fastball isn’t elite in terms of velocity. It sits 93-96 mph, which is now slightly above-average for a major league starter. Instead, his combination of a low, deceptive release from a low arm slot and fastball movement makes it a truly special bat-missing pitch.

Harrison pairs his sneaky fastball with a newly revamped slider. He ditched his sweeper for a mid-80s cut-slider. He also will show a changeup that will flash above-average.

Harrison has all the ingredients to be a frontline pitcher but none of the cohesive glue, which may come with time and experience.

Harrison is one of the most electric lefthanders in the minors. He is one of the most erratic as well. His raw stuff and unique deceptive traits are undeniable.

And also divisive.

—Geoff Pontes

Player Spotlight: Grayson Rodriguez

A lot can change in the course of a season.

Grayson Rodriguez entered 2023 ranked as the No. 6 prospect in baseball and a presumptive member of the Orioles’ Opening Day rotation.

But the 23-year-old righthander pitched his way out of Baltimore’s immediate plans by running up a 7.04 ERA in 15.1 spring training innings.

Rodriguez opened with Triple-A Norfolk, but his time there didn’t last long.

Called up on April 5, Rodriguez produced mostly rocky results but remained in Baltimore’s rotation through May. He posted a 7.35 ERA in 45.1 innings, undone by a 1.74 WHIP and 13 home runs allowed in 10 starts.

That earned him a ticket to Triple-A. He righted the ship and returned to Baltimore in mid July.

In his first seven starts back in MLB, Rodriguez was much sharper. He had a 3.24 ERA in 41.2 innings to go with a 1.08 WHIP and just two home runs allowed.

What changed?

Rodriguez dropped his cutter usage from 12% in his first stint to 1% in his second. Most of those cutters turned into 95-97 mph four-seam fastballs and changeups, his two strongest pitches.

Rodriguez’s changeup was one of the best in MLB via Statcast run value, and before that it was the finest in the International League, according to Best Tools voting.

Prospect Showdown: Jordan Westburg vs. Casey Schmitt

Athletic, versatile infielder? Check.

Drafted out of college in the five-round 2020 draft? Check.

Made MLB debut this season after a productive run through Triple-A? Check.

Jordan Westburg and Casey Schmitt share many commonalities and should be fixtures for competitive Orioles and Giants teams in the years to come. They contribute value in different ways.

Westburg has shown stronger on-base and power skills in the minor leagues and was off to a stronger start in MLB. He was getting an extended look at third base in Baltimore.

Schmitt is the stronger defensive player with more questions about offensive impact. He served as a two-way player in college and has one of the strongest infield arms in MLB at shortstop or third base.

Westburg   Schmitt

What They’re Saying: Luis Matos, OF, Giants

“I was on him when he first came stateside (in the 2019 Arizona League). He looks good. He just looks like he’s slowing everything down in the box.

“He’s still very aggressive, which will likely get exploited (at higher levels). He can really run and really play center field. He’s a classic up-the-middle guy.

Royce Lewis, 3B, Twins: Lewis hit his third grand slam in eight games to lead the Twins to a 20-6 rout of the Guardians on Monday. The 2017 No. 1 overall pick launched a 401-foot shot deep to left field in the second inning off Lucas Giolito to give the Twins a commanding 6-0 lead and break the game open. It was his latest grand slam in a torrid stretch that began with a grand slam off Rangers reliever Chris Stratton on Aug. 27 and included another grand slam off Guardians righthander Xzavion Curry the following day. Lewis became the first rookie in MLB history with three grand slams in a span of eight days or fewer and finished 3-for-4 with a career-high six RBIs.

Lawrence Butler, OF, Athletics: Butler hit two home runs in the Athletics’ 6-5 loss to the Blue Jays. The 23-year-old center fielder got the A’s on the board with a solo shot that traveled 417 feet to dead center in the fifth inning and added a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning that traveled 403 feet to bring the A’s within a run. The 2018 sixth-round pick finished 2-for-4 and now has four home runs in 23 games since being called up.

Gunnar Henderson, 3B, Orioles: Henderson went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs in the Orioles’ 6-3 win over the Angels. Henderson notched the Orioles’ first hit when he led off the second inning with a double and put the game away in the seventh when, with the Orioles nursing a slim 3-2 lead, he turned around a 96 mph fastball from Gerardo Reyes and launched it to right field for a three-run homer. The home run was Henderson’s 23rd of the season and moved him into a tie with Triston Casas for most among AL rookies.

Xavier Isaac, 1B, Rays: Isaac hit two home runs to continue his summer surge and lead High-A Bowling Green to a 7-0 win over Asheville in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday. The 2022 first-round pick is now 10-for-20 with three doubles, three homers and eight RBIs in five games since being promoted to Bowling Green and batted .356 in August.

Julian Aguiar, RHP, Reds: Aguiar continued his breakout season with seven innings pitched, four hits and one run allowed, no walks and a career-high 12 strikeouts to lead Double-A Chattanooga to a 7-1 win over Pensacola. The 22-year-old righthander struck out the side in the first inning to set the tone and stayed strong the entire way, retiring nine of his final 10 batters to finish on a high note.

Carter Aldrete, 3B, Giants: Aldrete has had a difficult season at Double-A Richmond, but he had a night to remember Thursday. Aldrete hit three home runs and had five RBIs to lead the Flying Squirrels to a wild 17-10 win over Hartford. Aldrete not only hit three homers, but homered in three consecutive at-bats. Aldrete hit a two-run homer off Carson Palmquist in the third inning, added a two-run homer off Adam McKillican in the fourth inning and launched a solo shot off Nick Garcia in the sixth inning. Overall Richmond hit eight home runs in the game, tied for the most in a minor league game this season.

]]>
Robby Snelling, LHP, Padres: The 2023 campaign has been a storybook season for Snelling as he’s climbed from Low-A up to Double-A. The 19-year-old lefty may have delivered his best start as a professional on Wednesday as he tossed five hitless innings against Wichita, striking out a career-high nine. Snelling’s combination of above-average stuff and advanced command of his repertoire has the lefty skyrocketing up the Top 100.

Ben Rice, C, Yankees: Over the last three weeks Rice has been among the hottest hitters in baseball. He made the Hot Sheet last week and is doing his best to get back on again this week. On Wednesday Rice went 4-for-6 with two home runs, a double and five RBIs. Rice is hitting .349/.402/.717 with 10 home runs and seven doubles in the month of August with one game left to play.

Jackson Jobe, RHP, Tigers: The disappointment of 2022 seems to be far in the rear view for Jobe as he continues to dazzle in 2023. On Wednesday night Jobe went six innings, allowing a run on six hits, no walks and nine strikeouts. Across 30 innings with High-A West Michigan, Jobe has 41 strikeouts to just three walks. While his ability to find his swing-and-miss stuff has gotten the headlines, the improved command of his entire arsenal has led Jobe back on the path to success. Jobe has one of the best combinations of stuff and strike-throwing ability in the lower minors.

Chase DeLauter, OF, Guardians: After an injury plagued beginning to his career DeLauter has found his footing with High-A Lake County. On Wednesday DeLauter recorded another four-hit game, his third four-hit game with the Captains. DeLauter is now hitting .376/.411/.571 with 17 doubles and three home runs in his first taste of High-A. The former Cape Cod League star looks ready for the challenge of Double-A.

Spencer Jones, OF, Yankees: Very few players can match the upside that Jones possesses in his 6-foot-7 frame. While his hit tool has been put to the test in 2023, the long-levered slugger is slowly adjusting and growing into a well-rounded hitter. On Wednesday Jones hit his first Double-A home run, a grand slam, on his way to a big day at the plate. Jones went 1-for-4 but reached base three times, with a pair of runs to go along with the grand slam.

Druw Jones, OF, D-Backs: It’s been a forgettable year for Jones, who’s been limited by injuries and ineffective play. On Wednesday, Jones connected for his second home run over his last five games. A hot finish to the season can go a long way toward changing the discussion around the 2022 No. 2 overall pick heading into the offseason.

Justin Crawford, OF, Phillies: It’s been a strong full-season debut for Crawford, who hit .344/.399/.478 over 69 games with Low-A Clearwater. On Wednesday Crawford went 4-for-4 with two doubles as he recorded his first four-hit game in High-A. While Crawford’s extreme groundball-heavy batted-ball profile leads to questions around his power upside, he’s a projectable, twitchy athlete with plenty of growth remaining as a hitter.

Jasson Dominguez, OF, Yankees: It was a big night for callups in New York City, with Dominguez receiving the call to the big leagues. Dominguez, who signed for $5.1 million during the 2019 international signing period, is among the most famous international signees of all-time, and faced Hall of Fame-level expectations prior to making his pro debut. Dominguez has done well to develop into a slugging switch-hitter with on-base ability and a center field defensive profile.

Ronny Mauricio, SS, Mets: On the other side of the city, the Mets called up their own highly touted former international signee in Mauricio. Mauricio is an aggressive hitter with natural bat-to-ball skills and power. He’s an impressive athlete who could develop into a valuable defender at peak value.

The Hot Sheet is back! Baseball America’s staff ranks the 20 hottest prospects from the previous week. This installment of the Prospect Hot Sheet considers how minor league players performed through Aug. 28. Contributing this week were Josh Norris, Geoff Pontes and J.J. Cooper.

This simply recognizes how the hottest prospects in the minors did in the past week—it’s not a re-ranking of the Baseball America Top 100 Prospects.

Geoff Pontes hosted a chat at 1 p.m. ET to discuss this week’s Hot Sheet. You can read the transcript here.

1. Alexander Canario, OF, Cubs
Team: Triple-A Iowa (International)
Age: 23

Why He’s Here: .458/.462/1.125 (11-for-24), 5 R, 4 2B, 0 3B, 4 HR, 8 RBIs, 1 BB, 8 SO

The Scoop: Canario has lost a chunk of this season due to injury, but he’s making up for lost time. The former Giants prospect clubbed four home runs this past week, continuing what has been a white-hot August. In the season’s penultimate month, Canario is hitting .326/.379/.684 with seven of the nine home runs he’s hit all season. (JN)

2. Zach Dezenzo, 3B, Astros
Team: Double-A Corpus Christi (Texas)
Age: 23

Why He’s Here: .321/.387/.857 (9-for-31), 7 R, 3 2B, 0 3B, 4 HR, 7 RBIs, 2 BB, 11 SO, 2-for-2 SB

The Scoop: It’s been a breakout season for Dezenzo as he blew through the High-A level to Double-A. For a player less than a year out of the draft he’s handled Double-A extremely well, hitting .255/.344/.490 over 51 games with the Hooks. Last week Dezenzo enjoyed arguably his best week as a professional, as he tallied multi-home run games on Friday and Sunday. After starting the series with Springfield 0-for-9 with four strikeouts, Dezenzo collected four consecutive multi-hit games to end the week, going 9-for-19 with seven extra-base hits in that time. Dezenzo’s fusion of plus contact, above-average approach and fringe-average contact make him another potential uncovered Astros gem. (GP)

3. Hunter Goodman, C, Rockies
Team:
Triple-A Albuquerque (Pacific Coast)
Age: 23

Why He’s Here: .588/.650/1.353 (10-for-17) 6 R, 1 2B, 4 HR, 11 RBIs, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 CS

The Scoop: Goodman’s last week in the minor leagues was an excellent way to say farewell. His four home runs pushed him into the MiLB home run lead with 34. And while his promotion may make it hard for him to hold onto that home run crown, Luken Baker (33 home runs) is also up in the majors, so this is a home run race where neither player is hoping to get a chance to add to their total. (JC)

4. Colt Keith, 3B, Tigers
Team: Triple-A Toledo (International)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .458/.531/.958 (11-for-24) 10 R, 3 2B, 3 HR, 10 RBIs, 6 BB, 1 SO.

The Scoop: To say that Louisville didn’t really ever figure out a way to attack Keith is quite obvious. He had six extra-base hits, five singles, six walks and one lonely strikeout. Keith went through a stretch in July not long after he was promoted to Toledo where he struck out 16 times in 44 plate appearances. Now that he’s settled in, he’s showing again how he’s a pure hitter with excellent bat-to-ball skills. Since Aug. 15, he’s struck out just three times in 54 plate appearances while clubbing eight extra-base hits. (JC)

5. Wenceel Perez, SS, Tigers
Team: Triple-A Toledo (International)
Age: 23

Why He’s Here: .409/.500/.955 (9-for-22), 7 R, 6 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 5 BB, 2 SO, 0-for-0 SB

The Scoop: In the not too distant past, Perez was considered an exciting prospect with a higher-end hit tool and some power projection. While Perez’s prospect status has long since faded, he’s enjoyed solid performances over the last two seasons. Perez earned a promotion to Double-A in July and so far has hit .304/.434/.569 over his first 28 games. Last week Perez continued his hot hitting for the Mud Hens, going 8-for-14 over the first three games of the week with seven extra-base hits. He had a hit in four of five games and reached base twice in all but one game. Perez is showing advanced approach and bat-to-ball skills and is perhaps scratching the surface of that power projection promised all those years ago. (GP)

6. Ronny Mauricio, SS, Mets
Team: Triple-A Syracuse (International)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .435/.536/.870 (10-for-23), 7 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 4 RBIs, 5 BB, 4 SO, 3-for-3 SB

The Scoop: Anytime Mauricio walks more than he strikes out he makes the Hot Sheet, as that is typically a sign that Mauricio is locked in and seeing the ball well. Not since Justin Upton’s heyday have we seen a player as streaky as Mauricio. After opening the season scorching hot for two months, Mauricio hit a prolonged slump through June into July, hitting .218/.268/.420 from June 1 to July 17. Since then Mauricio has caught fire, finishing his season in a similar fashion to how it opened. Last week Mauricio collected a hit in the first five games of the series with Buffalo, hitting five extra-base hits from Tuesday to Saturday. Mauricio is a twitchy athlete with plus power and an aggressive contact-driven approach. (GP)

7. Ian Seymour, LHP, Rays
Team: Low-A Charleston (Carolina)
Age:  24

Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.00, 2 GS, 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 1 HBP, 0 BB, 12 SO

The Scoop: When the 2022 season began, Seymour seemed to be all out of sorts. It turned out he had an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. He’s working his way back now, but it’s probably time to send him to a more challenging assignment than Charleston. Seymour has allowed just two runs in five starts and 19.1 innings this month. He’s also struck out 13 batters since he last allowed a walk. Seymour’s changeup looks back to its pre-injury form, and his slider looks a little sharper as well. (JC)

8. Ben Rice, C, Yankees
Team: Double-A Somerset (Eastern)
Age: 24

Why He’s Here: .360/.407/.760 (9-for-25), 5 R, 1 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 7 RBIs, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: In the summer of 2021, Rice was playing competitive baseball for the first time since July 2020. An unheralded Ivy League product, Rice took advantage of his opportunity to play with Cotuit in the Cape Cod League, hitting .265/.372/.353 over 13 games and earning a 12th-round selection by the Yankees. The Massachusetts native has made the most of his opportunity this season, hitting .322/.437/.620 across 57 games over three levels. He’s been especially hot over the last few weeks and collected a hit in five of six games, including three multi-hit games last week. A lefthanded bat with advanced approach, bat-to-ball skills and power, Rice might just be a true sleeper bat. (GP)

9. Victor Scott II, OF, Cardinals
Team: Double-A Springfield (Texas)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .444/.483/.704 (12-for-27) 7 R, 4 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SO, 3 SB, 1 CS

The Scoop: Scott remains locked in a very friendly battle with Chandler Simpson for the MiLB stolen base crown. At this point, it’s clear that one of the two is going to win it. Simpson has 85 steals. Scott has 81. No one else has more than 65. The second question is whether either of them will become the first minor leaguer to steal 100 bases since Billy Hamilton set the all-time MiLB record with 155 steals in 2012. Yes, the stolen base rules have been liberalized, but Scott’s 81 steals are already more than the MiLB leader in 15 of the past 30 years. (JC)

10. Matt Shaw, SS, Cubs
Team: High-A South Bend (Midwest)
Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .476/.522/.905 (10-for-21), 6 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBIs, 1 BB, 2 SO, 2-for-3 SB

The Scoop: So far, so good for the Cubs’ first-round selection out of Maryland. Shaw skipped Low-A and instead headed directly to High-A South Bend after a brief tuneup in the ACL. In 20 games in the Midwest League, he’s done a little bit of everything. He has four home runs—including two this past week—and seven stolen bases in eight chances. His addition gives the Cubs another middle-diamond talent in a system that is clearly on the rise. (JN)

11. Hurston Waldrep, RHP, Braves
Team: High-A Rome (South Atlantic)
Age: 21

Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.00, 4.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 SO, 0 HR

The Scoop: The 24th overall pick in the draft, Waldrep has been tremendous since turning pro, as he’s now made four total starts, striking out 25 to just six walks over 15 innings. Waldrep boasts a cut fastball in the mid 90s, a slider and his famous splitter. Waldrep struck out 10 in his last start, showing improved command of his arsenal. Under the Braves tutelage Waldrep has a chance to develop into one of the top pitching prospects in the minors. If Waldrep lands his fastball consistently, his secondaries will dominate. (GP)

12. Thomas Saggese, SS, Cardinals
Team: Double-A Springfield (Texas)
Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .391/.464/.783 (9-for-23), 5 R, 0 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 8 RBIs, 4 BB, 6 SO

The Scoop: Saggese was part of the two-player package the Rangers sent St. Louis in July in exchange for lefty Jordan Montgomery. With Texas, he was one of the system’s better-performing prospects. With St. Louis, it’s been more of the same. He already has a cycle to his credit with his new organization, and has bashed an astonishing nine home runs in 24 games since switching from Frisco to Springfield in the Texas League. (JN)

13. Denzer Guzman, SS, Angels
Team: Low-A Inland Empire (California)
Age: 19

Why He’s Here: .409/.435/.727 (9-for-22), 7 R, 1 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 1 BB, 7 SO, 0-for-0 SB

The Scoop: While Guzman has been young for the level in 2023, he’s really struggled with Inland Empire this season. Last week, however, Guzman collected a hit in all five games, including three multi-hit games. Guzman shows average plate skills with fringe-average power, but he’s at an age where his power could flourish in the coming years. (GP)

14. Jadher Areinamo, SS, Brewers
Team: Low-A Carolina (Carolina)
Age: 19

Why He’s Here: .500/.542/.773 (11-for-22), 7 R, 3 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 2 BB, 1 SO

The Scoop: Areinamo won’t wow you with any one tool, but he’ll do enough of everything to make himself an interesting prospect. This week, he showed off literal light-tower power when he clanged a home run off the … light tower … in left-center field at his home park of Five County Stadium. Areinamo is very difficult to strike out—his rate this season is just 12.4%—and he can ably handle second base and third base with occasional turns at shortstop. His batting average (.305) and hit total (111) are both second in the Carolina League. (JN)

15. Tai Peete, SS, Mariners
Team: Low-A Modesto (California)
Age: 18

Why He’s Here: .381/.409/.762 (8-for-21), 3 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 11 RBIs, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: Most of Peete’s production this week can be boiled down to two at-bats on Sunday. In the seventh inning of Modesto’s game with San Jose, Peete hit a grand slam. An inning later, he stepped up with the bases loaded and repeated (RePeeted?) the feat, giving him grand slams for each of his first two professional homers, and in consecutive innings. No matter what he does for the rest of his career, Peete—who was the 30th overall pick in the 2023 draft—already has a day he’ll remember for the rest of his life. (JN)

16. Junior Caminero, SS, Rays
Team: Double-A Montgomery (Southern)
Age: 20

Why He’s Here: .421/.455/.842 (8-for-19), 5 R, 0 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBIs, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: What more is there to say about Caminero, who has been tremendous for the large majority of the 2023 season. He destroyed the High-A Midwest League before reaching Double-A as a teenager. Since then, he’s been excellent. Caminero crunched two more home runs this past week, giving him 13 in 65 games in the Southern League and 24 for the season. That total leaves him tied with Washington’s James Wood for players 20 years old or younger. (JN)

17. Trey Dombroski, LHP, Astros
Team: Low-A Fayetteville (Carolina)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.00, 1 GS, 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 SO

The Scoop: Coming into his Aug. 23 start, Dombroski had allowed 16 hits and 15 runs in just 11.1 innings this month. He’s added nearly a run to his ERA and seemed to be struggling to finish the season strong. But when Dombroski is clicking, he can be something special. He’ll rarely brush past 90-91 mph, but he can locate the fastball well and his changeup can truly baffle a Class A hitter. Everything clicked against Down East. Dombroski’s five perfect innings were truly perfect. He struck out 11 of the 15 batters he faced. But he’s been just as perfect before this season. He also threw five perfect innings in a May relief appearance against Myrtle Beach and he threw 4.2 hitless innings against Columbia in April. (JC)

18. Matt Gorski, OF, Pirates
Team: Double-A Altoona (Eastern)
Age: 25

Why He’s Here: .350/.391/.800 (7-for-20), 7 R, 3 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 2 BB, 4 SO, 0-for-0 SB

The Scoop: Few players are as tooled-up as Gorski is. While he might not be the most popular name in the Pirates system his combination of elite athleticism, power and plus defensive tools makes Gorski an underrated player. Last week Gorski was locked in as he collected a hit in all five games he played in. He had five extra-base hits, including two home runs against Akron. Gorski has the look of a fourth outfielder who can provide power-hitting value off the bench, speed on the bases or strong defense at any spot in the outfield in a pinch. (GP)

19. Spencer Horwitz, 1B, Blue Jays
Team: Triple-A Buffalo (International)
Age: 25

Why He’s Here: .579/.625/.842 (11-for-19), 4 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 6 RBIs, 3 BB, 3 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop:  Few teams draft late-round sleeper bats quite as well as the Blue Jays. Horwitz and Davis Schneider are cut from a similar cloth. Both have advanced plate skills, contact and power. Schneider’s power is more actualized in terms of home runs while Horwitz is content with stinging liners all over the field. Last week Horwitz collected multiple hits in four of six games—he reached base 14 times in the series with Syracuse. Horwitz has the ability to see everyday playing time with a second division team and could be an above-average offensive performer over a full season. (GP)

20. Eddys Leonard, SS, Tigers
Team: Triple-A Toledo (International)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .461/.565/.941 (8-for-17) 7 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBIs, 4 BB, 2 SO.

The Scoop: In April this year, Leonard hit a putrid .129/.247/.129 in 81 plate appearances. But as bad as Leonard was to start the year, he’s finishing in incredibly impressive fashion. He’s hitting .349/.416/.555 since July 1, and has been even better (.358/.416/.627) since he arrived in Toledo after being acquired by the Tigers when the Dodgers designated him for assignment. While the Dodgers didn’t have room for Leonard on the roster, he’s worth a long look for the Tigers. He’s athletic, has plenty of defensive versatility (the Tigers have already played him at second and third base, shortstop and center field) and solid power. He’s posted a 91 mph average exit velocity and a 107.9 mph 90th percentile exit velocity since he joined the Tigers. And he’s done that while striking out just 14% of the time this month.  (JC)

HELIUM

Jhancarlos Lara, RHP, Braves
Lara is an up-arrow arm in Atlanta’s system who has a wide variety of outcomes. He’s a physical righthander with a big-time fastball whose velocity can sit in the mid 90s for the duration of outings. His slider will flash above-average and his changeup is a clear third pitch in its nascent stages. If that pitch comes along, he has a chance to become a rotation piece. Doing so will also require that he develops a bit more feel to pitch. Even if neither of those things comes true, Lara could be a weapon in the back end of a bullpen. (JN)

The Pirates have seen many prospects/players go on to thrive in other organizations – is anyone worried the Pirates don’t get the best out of Skenes?

I’m more worried about Skenes staying healthy than anything else, as he’s a pitcher. But I think he’s pretty much a what you see is what you get guy who should fly to the majors so quickly that he’ll largely be the same guy when he hits the majors as he was when he left LSU with a few minor tweaks.

Arjun Nimmala was my favorite HS prospect this draft. How are the early impressions since he signed?

Hey everyone. I’m thrilled to be chatting with BA subscribers. Thank you all for coming out. The early returns we’ve heard are very good. I know it’s a very small sample, but there’s bat speed, hitting ability, range and an arm at shortstop and room to grow. So far so good.

In your view, what are the top 5 MLB organizations for player development?

I think it’s the Dodgers at the top and a pretty clear gap to everyone else. There are other impressive orgs in development, but what the Dodgers do year in and year out is hard to top. They are incredibly impressive in what they do in pretty much every aspect of their operation. The value of getting and developing a Bobby Miller (2020, pick #29), Will Smith (#32), Walker Buehler (#24) at the back of the first round is absurd. There are teams picking top 10 year after year that can’t match that. The Rays are obviously impressive as well. The Orioles are cranking out a ton of players, but I put the Dodgers at the top.

How effective do you think Yamamoto will be in the MLB?

Very. Top-end Japanese pitchers generally make a very smooth transition to the majors, and Yamamoto has been exceptionally top-end in Japan. His career ERA is below 2.00. That’s hard for me to fathom. And the stuff is legit. Look at what Senga has done this year. Yamamoto is better than Senga IMO.

When are the stats returning to the BA website?

Soon. I wish I could say tomorrow, but I do know it will be soon. Our web dev team is getting close to having them ready to go. We’re really sorry it’s taking this long. It’s taking way longer than we had hoped.

Why does your newly designed website make great content harder rather than easier to find?

I’m sorry you’re finding that to be the case. Can I recommend bookmarking this page? https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/category/news/ This doesn’t show you every story as it posts, but it shows most of them. This a good page to see what you may have missed. We are working hard to keep making the new site better and better.

If Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched 175 innings next year in the majors, what kind of stat line do you think he would put up?

I’d expect him to be among the top 20-25 starting pitchers in baseball.

Is Cole Ragans for real? Did the Royals actually do something right for once?

It’s hard to fake your way to a stretch of dominance like he’s just shown. And the stuff is clearly legit. Now, he’s not this good (no one is), but this does look like a guy that can be written into the 2024/2025 rotation in pen, not pencil. It’s an encouraging development for the Royals.

Jasson Dominquez has been super hot is he going to move up in the Top 100

He has had an outstanding August, and it’s very encouraging that he’s been so good right after a jump to Triple-A. That said, here are now some caveats to that. He’s got a .480 BABIP since he moved to Triple-A. If Ted Williams and Barry Bonds were fused into a super-hero, they wouldn’t post a .480 BABIP. I’ve written about Dominguez before here. I think this is still relatively accurate a year later. He’s a well-rounded player who should help a big league club in a multitude of ways. He can run, provide some defensive value. He takes good at-bats and I do think he can hit for a higher average than he’s shown this year. But he’s not most likely a well-rounded solid regular more than he’ll be a star. And I think there are a lot of expectations that he’ll be a star.

What is the reason Hunter Goodman gets no love when it comes to the rankings? Is it all defense or are there questions about his hitting vs. better pitching?

We talked about him on yesterday’s podcast if you want a more in-depth answer, but the questions really revolve around where he’s going to play. If he was a sure-fire catcher, he’d be ranked higher, but he’s not. If he was a sure-fire outfielder, that would allay concerns, but he’s not. He’s most likely a 1B/DH and the demands on the bat at that position are very high. There’s a path to him being a long-term regular for the Rockies, but it will involve him continuing to get better and better.

Overall opinion on FCL Yankees Top players. They really did well.

Our Josh Norris has just been finishing up a Top 20 Florida Complex League prospects list. I won’t spoilt the list, but you’ll be very happy if you’re a Yankees fan.

Also will the Summer of Ben Rice continue in the Fall League or do they go right into Spring Training instead.

I don’t have any inside info on it, but I can see the case for him going to the AFL. It’s not like he’s maxed out on games where he needs to be shut down. But there is also a horse-trading aspect of how AFL rosters are put together (you need guys at every position and you’re trying to balance the needs of multiple teams) that makes predicting it quite difficult.

Is Tom Saggese for real? And Drew Thorpe seems to be pitching like the best SP in the minors. How come I’ve only seen him on maybe 1 top 100 rankings?

We’ve been debating adding Thorpe to the 100 for a while and I wouldn’t be shocked if he climbs on as players’ graduate. Most of his success came in Class A, so it has been encouraging to see him handle the jump to High-A. With Saggese, he’s good. He can hit. He can probably play 2B. We talked about him on yesterday’s podcast as well. He’s a very likely big leaguer. The question is going to come down to whether he has enough power to be a long-term starter or a useful big leaguer with a briefer time as a regular.

Curtis Mead got a cup of coffee. How do you see his longer term role in Tampa working out?

I think this is a semi-lost year for Mead because of injuries. He’s still young. He can still really hit. The big question that’s tough to answer is where he fits positionally for the Rays. If he’s a 1B long-term, it’s going to be tough. If he can prove he can handle 2B or 3B (especially 2B) there is a clearer path. I think he’s one of several players (Jonathan Aranda is another) where the Rays will have to figure out this offseason or next year at the latest whether they are pieces of the Rays future or trade pieces to fill other needs.

I was looking through Dylan Lesko’s game log and it looks like there are some good and some bad. Strikeouts look good. How has his stuff looked, post TJ?

I watched some of his first start for Fort Wayne, so this isn’t based on a scout conversation but what I saw with my own eyes on MiLB.tv. He can still pull a string on his changeup, and he’s still throwing a big, breaking curve but one that he’s not always consistent with. I don’t think his fastball has the same hair to it yet that it had pre-injury, but that and feel for locating often takes a little while to get back post-TJ. Nothing so far seems concerning.

If you had to bet on it today, do you think Paul Skenes breaks camp in the rotation to begin 24?

No. But I’d bet he’s up before long…That’s my guess for now.

Do you think Chayce McDermott or Griff McGarry is more likely to remain a starter? Think either will be up in September?

I think McDermott more likely to be a starter. McGarry’s control troubles are worrisome. I don’t think either of them will be up next month, but I’d see as unlikely for McDermott and nearly impossible for McGarry. If you haven’t been following McGarry closely, he couldn’t throw a strike two outings ago and had to be lifted after walking six and hitting a seventh batter in a seven-batter outing. He was better in his more recent start, but he still had a stretch where he threw 11 consecutive balls. He just seems to lose his delivery at times where he can’t locate.

MATT. DAMON.

BEN. AFFLECK.

After a horrid start, has Emmanuel Rodriguez reinstated himself as a bonafide prospect with a legitimate chance of being a good CF with the Twins?

Yes. Still a bonafide prospect with a chance to be a regular in the OF. Not so sure he’ll be playing CF long-term, especially as the Twins seem to really value CF defense.

Answering funny questions in chats is something that writers have done to draw me to their content. It shows that like the rest of us, you like humor. Cheers!

I would describe my sense of humor as enjoying some bizarre Conan O’Brien 1:15 a.m. sketch where he’s on Satellite TV channels watching a channel called “Jar Barf.” Bizarre, unexpected humor is what I love.

Thanks for chatting with a bunch of baseball nerds! That is all.

If you have in any way followed my fascination with one-knee catching stances, the decline in error rates, the fact that when TV broadcasts switch from one view to another they back-up a few frames in time or many, many other aspects of my bizarre baseball fascinations, I can comfortably say I wear baseball nerd proudly myself as a badge of honor. And thank you all for subscribing. It’s why I get to have the best job I can imagine.

World Series prediction?

Braves-Mariners. Partly because I think that would be a very fun series.

If you had to pick one of Elijah Green or Miguel Bleis to boom and become a star, who would you go with, and why? Thank you kindly!

I have to go with Bleis. If everything clicks with Green, he’s a star. He has 8 raw power. He has speed. He could be a 35+ HR guy with defensive value in the outfield. But that said, it’s really hard to find any examples of players who go from a 40+% strikeout rate in the low minors to future big league stardom. Bleis doesn’t have that potentially fatal flaw to his game to worry about as much.

Do you anticipate any MiLB franchises moving or losing their affiliations due to issues with meeting MLB’s facility standards?

There definitely will be teams moving. We’re seeing a good bit of work on that right now. For instance Down East is likely to move to Spartanburg, S.C. if the stadium proposal there gets built. And a suburb of Wilmington has made a run at getting Hickory (or Down East) to move there. But to your bigger question, I’m fascinated to see what happens out West. I have yet to talk to anyone who expects all or most of the California League to meet the new facility standards. If that happens, we don’t know yet what happens. There are no logical options to step in and replace the non-compliant stadiums/cities. That’s worth paying attention to over the next two years.

Which of these AAA/recent MLB promotion guys will have the most offensive WAR over the next 3 yrs? JoeyOrtiz, VGrissom, JAranda, JHMalloy, DSchneider, ACanario

I’d have to go Aranda is you are talking purely about offense here, although I could see Canario maybe blossoming as well (just higher risk and more likelihood it doesn’t click). I think Ortiz is the best all-around player you listed, but a lot of his value is based on his glove.

How do we get MiLB to choose a non-Monday off day? I get the business side of why teams prefer it but I don’t think they are weighting my specific needs enough

I think that’s going to be tough for a number of reasons. For one, Monday is a brutal day for attendance, so it fits as an off day from that standpoint. For another, Sunday day games are way better than mid-week day games from a scheduling perspective. And Sunday day game into travel + off day is perfect for both team employees and players/staff.

I am still unable to view the statistics of any player. Am I doing something wrong or are we not able to view them?

You are not doing anything wrong. We’re working as hard as we can to have them back quickly. But they aren’t on those pages yet.

The Dodgers’ two DSL teams were dominant this year. To what extent should that be attributed to superior scouting vs. player development vs. dumb luck?

I don’t think you luck your way to the best record in a league with the best run differential while having another team that has one of the top four records/differentials in the league. From this past spring, Josh Norris for us was hearing about how loaded the Dodgers’ youngest teams were.

What are the chances for Bryce Eldridge to end up as a true two way player?

I think it’s unlikely. I’d love to be wrong on this, but we haven’t seen any US team figure out how to carry through on the initial desire to have a two-way player. Masyn Winn did it briefly, then focused on SS. Bubba Chandler’s two-way status was a brief, brief blip. I do think the struggles of Brendan McKay to stay healthy didn’t help the case for others, even if that was unrelated to playing both ways.

What are the chances we see another 30 minor league teams cut in the next few years? Teams would be content with just 3 full season affiliates?

The current PDL agreement between MLB and MiLB team owners is a 10-year agreement that runs through 2030. It guarantees that such a reduction cannot happen during the life of that agreement and that each MiLB PDL owner is assured a team as long as they remaining through that time as far as meeting their responsibilities as a PDL holder (facility standards, travel, stadium upkeep, etc.) On top of that, there’s now a collective bargaining agreement between MLB and MiLB players, which means player numbers cannot be cut by MLB unilaterally, it would have to be bargained with the players. As far as would teams be content? Some would. More would not. But I would say many MLB front offices wanted more than the current team/roster limits that went through. They and their MLB team owners may not always agree on that.

Thoughts on Kerry Carpenter’s realistic ceiling for 2024 if he can play a full season healthy?

I would say something like what he’s done this year with better counting stats because of more games. The key thing to watch is if Carpenter can put together better PAs against lefties. He didn’t struggle as much against them in the minors as he has in the majors, so that’s something I’ll be watching.

]]>
Orelvis Martinez, SS, Blue Jays: While Martinez wasn’t in the starting lineup on Wednesday, he still managed to have a standout day at the plate. After Spencer Horwitz was hit by a pitch, Martinez entered the game and proceeded to go 3-for-3 with a home run and a double, finishing a triple short of the cycle. Martinez is hitting .272/.342/.515 over his first 28 Triple-A games at just 21 years old. After a difficult 2022, Martinez has done well to recapture his prospect status.

Alexander Canario, OF, Cubs: The 2022 season was a breakout campaign for Canario. Unfortunately, an injury during Dominican Winter League play last offseason robbed Canario of the first months of the 2023 season. After taking a few weeks to get going with Triple-A Iowa, Canario has caught fire over the last few weeks. On Wednesday he went 3-for-4 with a home run, his fourth home run over his last eight games. If the opportunity arises, Canario could see time with the Cubs late this season.

Hunter Goodman, C, Rockies: After a strong first half with Double-A Hartford, Goodman earned a promotion to Triple-A Albuquerque on Aug. 8. In his 13 games with the Isotopes, Goodman has hit .340/.386/.849 with seven home runs. Goodman went 3-for-3 on Wednesday with a pair of walks as he reached base in all five plate appearances. Goodman has legitimate power and improving plate skills that may allow him to get to his power consistently long term.

Tyler Stuart, RHP, Mets: The 2022 sixth-rounder from Southern Mississippi has enjoyed an excellent first professional season, reaching Double-A and performing well. On Wednesday Stuart went six innings against New Hampshire, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out six batters in a scoreless start. On the season Stuart is 7-2 with a 2.20 ERA and 112 strikeouts across 110.2 innings pitched. Stuart looks ready to potentially contribute to a big league rotation in 2024.

Mick Abel, RHP, Phillies: Over nine home games Abel has a 7.53 ERA, while in road games he has a 2.17 ERA over 10 starts.  On Wednesday Abel was on the road, and his trend of strong performances away from Reading continued as he went seven innings, allowing two hits, four walks and an earned run, while striking out three. Abel’s up-and-down season has hurt his prospect status, but he still possesses a plus fastball and a plus curveball, with hope for a third pitch emerging.
