2023 Cape Cod League All-Star Game Rosters, Player-By-Player Analysis — College Baseball, MLB Draft, Prospects

Each season the Cape Cod League selects all-stars from the East and West divisions to compete in the annual All-Star Game. The 2023 All-Star Game will take place on Saturday, July 22 at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass. The annual event includes a home run derby and a nine-inning game played between the East and West all-stars. Below we have included rosters, stats and analysis for each player.

Skinny: Moza enjoyed a strong sophomore season for the Crimson Tide with a 3.09 ERA and 23 strikeouts to nine walks in 23.1 innings pitched. This summer for Harwich, he has a 3.29 ERA with a stellar strikeout-to-walk ratio of 21-to-3 in 13.2 innings pitched. Moza has serious swing-and-miss stuff, with all three of his offerings (fastball, slider, and changeup) generating miss rates of at least 40%. Most impressively, his sharp slider has a miss rate of 72%.

Leighton Finley, Yarmouth-Dennis (Georgia)
Skinny: The rising sophomore has been one of the best relievers in the league this summer. In 16.1 innings pitched Finely has not allowed an earned run and has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 19-to-4. Finley hides the ball extremely well and utilizes an effective fastball-curveball combination, with each offering generates its fair share of swing and miss.

Tom Chmielewski, Harwich (Princeton)
Skinny: The veteran lefthander has anchored the Harwich rotation all summer, pitching his way to a 2.88 ERA with 18 strikeouts to just five walks across 25 innings pitched. Chmielewski uses his fastball-slider combination to keep hitters off balance and induce soft contact.

Jonathan Gonzalez, Orleans (Stetson)
Skinny: Gonzalez this summer has pitched his way to a 2.07 ERA with 18 strikeouts across 17 innings pitched. He has been used both out of the bullpen in late-inning situations as well as in the rotation. Gonzalez’s best pitch is his changeup. With plenty of late arm-side fade, hitters frequently swing over the top of it.

Joey DeChiaro, Brewster (Old Dominion)
Skinny: The 6-foot-2 southpaw will toe the rubber for the East Divison and to this point, he’s posted a 3.52 ERA with 18 strikeouts across 23 innings pitched. DeChiaro commands each of his offerings well, with his best pitch being a plus changeup.

Patrick Forbes, Brewster (Louisville)
Skinny: Forbes has been productive on both sides of the baseball this summer, as he is hitting .241 with a home run while also being one of the Whitecaps’ most reliable arms on the mound. Forbes has pitched his way to a 2.25 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched.

Aiden Jimenez, Chatham (Oregon State)
Skinny: Although Jimenez has just 7.1 innings to his name, he has emerged as arguably Chatham’s most reliable arm. Jimenez has a mid-90s fastball as well as two effective offspeed offerings in his changeup and slider. Through four appearances, he has a 2.45 ERA and has walked only one hitter.

Derek Clark, Orleans (West Virginia)
Skinny: Clark had a magnificent spring season at Northwood (Mich.) in which he pitched his way to a 2.78 ERA with 104 strikeouts to just 19 walks in 103.2 innings pitched. The pitchability specialist this summer has been used exclusively out of the bullpen, but his ability to throw upwards of four innings at a time has proven to be invaluable for the Firebirds. Clark recently transferred to West Virginia and in 20 innings this summer has a 1.35 ERA with 23 strikeouts.

Sean Matson, Orleans (Harvard)
Skinny: Matson has established himself not only as the most effective arm on Orleans’ roster, but perhaps in the entire East Division. In 13.2 innings pitched he has yet to allow an earned run while boasting a 17-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He has a quick arm and some natural deception in his delivery. Matson’s best offering is a tight-spinning slider that has a miss rate of 50%.

Landon Beidelschies, Yarmouth-Dennis (Ohio State)
Skinny: Beidelschies this summer has been one of the anchors of an outstanding Yarmouth Dennis bullpen. The freshman lefthander has been up to 95 mph with his fastball, and to this point has amassed a 2.16 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched.

CATCHERS

Brock Tibbitts, C, Brewster (Indiana)
Skinny: After a stellar sophomore campaign for the Hoosiers in which he hit .357, Tibbitts has picked up right where he left off and is hitting a team-leading .301 with a pair of doubles. The 6-foot-4 rising junior has defended well both at first base and behind the plate.

Bryan Arendt, C, Harwich (UNC-Wilmington)
Skinny: Arendt this summer has shown well in his second stint for Harwich to the tune of a .259 average. In addition to his two doubles and two home runs, a refined approach has led to a respectable walk-to-strikeout ratio of 9-to-12. Arendt is a strong defender with a plus throwing arm and this summer has thrown out 13-of-32 (41%) potential basestealers.

Jo Oyama, 2B, UC Irvine
Skinny: Oyama is one of the most exciting players to watch in the entire league with his plus speed, quick hands at the plate and exhilarating play style. His .357 average ranks second in the league, while his five triples rank first. Oyama is your prototypical leadoff hitter with a slash-and-dash approach, but he has more impact in his bat than one would think.

Hunter Hines, 1B, Yarmouth-Dennis (Mississippi State)
Skinny: Hines is in the middle of an MVP-type season for Yarmouth-Dennis, as he leads the league in both home runs (nine) and RBIs (32). He is on pace to be the first Cape League player to hit 10 or more home runs since Bobby Dalbec did so in 2015. Hines has thunderous raw power and is a big reason as to why Y-D is currently in first place in the East.

Skinny: The Massachusetts native has felt right at home this summer for the Orleans Firebirds, establishing himself as one of Kelly Nicholson’s most trusted bats. The sophomore third baseman is hitting .259 with a double, a triple and two home runs. Penney has also shown an advanced approach and has walked nearly as much as he has struck out.

Skinny: Camarillo this spring was the best hitter in the Big West after hitting .371 with 15 doubles and seven home runs. His production has fallen off a bit this summer, but Camarillo has laced three doubles and is a plus defender with smooth actions at shortstop.

Austin swings a fast bat and is an above-average runner with three stolen bases to his name. He provides valuable versatility defensively, and this summer has played both in the outfield and on the dirt.

Skinny: Day had an outstanding sophomore season for Kansas State in which he hit .356 with 13 extra-base hits. Most impressively, he had a .492 on-base percentage thanks to a walk-to-strikeout ratio of 49-to-22. Day this summer has demonstrated advanced bat-to-ball skills and has five extra-base hits. He has played all over the diamond defensively, but is best at second base.

Skinny: Hill is a tall, athletic lefthander with a three-pitch mix he can command for strikes. No pitcher has performed as well as Hill has this summer, as his 0.37 ERA is nearly a full run better than Derek Clark at No. 2. Hill sits low 90s on his fastball, mixing in a slider at 79-81 mph and a split-changeup.

Matthew McShane, Bourne (St. Joseph’s)
Skinny: A righthanded reliever out of St. Joseph’s, McShane has struck out 19 batters across seven appearances. He’s been a utility relief option for Bourne, going 3.2 innings in his longest appearance this summer. McShane sits 92-93 mph with a pair of breaking balls in a low-to-mid-80s slider and a curveball.

Garrett Coe, Falmouth (Connecticut)
Skinny: A big-bodied lefthander out of UConn, Coe has been a go-to option for Falmouth out of the bullpen, twirling 10.2 consecutive scoreless innings to open the month of July. Coe split time between the UConn bullpen and rotation in 2023.

Bryce Cunningham, Bourne (Vanderbilt)
Skinny: After a solid showing for Bourne last summer, the Vanderbilt righthander returned to Doran Park in 2023. Over three starts he’s been excellent, striking out 20 batters over 14.2 innings while limiting opposing hitters to three runs. Cunningham mixes a low-90s fastball with a low-to-mid-80s slider and a changeup.

Jake Gigliotti, Cotuit (Northeastern)
Skinny: The Northeastern righthander won’t overpower you with stuff but his movement profile is unique. A sidearmer, Gigliotti sits mid 80s with heavy arm-side run on his fastball, mixing in a slider and changeup and playing the east-west game to perfection.

Skinny: Ryan spent his summers in Falmouth growing up, and he now plays for his hometown team. This is Ryan’s second summer with Falmouth and his second All-Star Game appearance as well.

Jake Faherty, Wareham (Arkansas)
Skinny: A 2024 draft-eligible righthander out of Arkansas, Faherty has an up-tempo, high-effort delivery with a long arm action. He uses a fastball at 93-95 mph, a high-spin cutter at 86-89 mph and a low-80s slider. Faherty has been a consistent performer out of the Gatemen bullpen this summer.

Ethan Lanthier, Hyannis (Transfer Portal)
Skinny: The righthander spent his first two collegiate seasons with Division II St. Cloud State (Minn.) and entered the transfer portal this summer. He’s been a strong performer for Hyannis, striking out 18 batters over 11.1 innings. He uses a mid-90s fastball, a high-80s changeup and a low-80s slider.

Will Koger, Wareham (Louisville)

Jamie Arnold, Hyannis (Florida State)
Skinny: Arnold is a low-slot lefthander who sits 89-90 mph on his fastball, mixing in a slider at 79-80 mph with lots of horizontal sweep. Arnold has performed well with Hyannis, striking out 21 batters over 16.1 innings of work split between the rotation and the bullpen.

Derek Bender, C, Bourne (Coastal Carolina)
Skinny: Few hitters have enjoyed the sort of consistent success Bender has had this summer. After hitting .341/.399/.635 with 19 home runs for Coastal Carolina, Bender is currently the CCBL leader in batting average. A multi-positional player seeing time at catcher, outfield and first base, Bender has a good combination of feel to hit, power and speed.
