Prospect Report: Kyle Manzardo Stays Hot

Kyle Manzardo, 1B, Guardians: Acquired for Aaron Civale from the Rays at the trade deadline, Manzardo had to overcome injury before debuting for his new club. After a difficult 2023 season Manzardo looks to be hitting his stride late. With a home run in last night’s game, Manzardo has three home runs over the last two games and five home runs over his last eight. Blessed with advanced plate skills, if Manzardo can recapture his power swing from 2022, he could be a rookie of the year candidate for the Guardians in 2023.
Nick Gonzales, 2B, Pirates: A night after Gonzales hit for his first career cycle, the Pirates infielder stayed hot. Gonzales collected three hits including a triple as Indianapolis held on to win 14-11. Gonzales made his major leagues debut in 2023 and enjoyed a productive season with Indianapolis hitting .284/.386/.510 with 13 home runs. Gonzales is ready for a full time opportunity in the big leagues as soon as next season, it’s just a matter of hitting enough to stick around.
Connor Norby, 2B, Orioles: The 2021 second round pick often gets lots in the shuffle of a loaded Orioles system but Norby has been a productive pro hitter over the last two seasons. On Wednesday night Norby connected for his 20th home run of the season, giving the second baseman consecutive 20+ home run minor league seasons to open his career. Norby still has a year before he needs to be added to the 40 man roster, but looks like he’s ready to contribute in the majors as early as 2024.
Jackson Chourio, OF, Brewers: It’s been a strong second half for Chourio as he came out of the gates after the All-Star break a man possessed. He benefited from the Southern League’s switch back to the regular baseball and earned a late season promotion to Triple-A Nashville. On Wednesday Chourio collected two hits for his first multi-hit game at the Triple-A level. He also collected his second double in as many nights as he looks to be taking to Triple-A immediately.
Michael Busch, 2B, Dodgers: After four full minor league seasons, Busch has proved he can hit minor league pitching. In 2023, Busch has enjoyed one of the best seasons in the minor leagues this side of Luken Baker. Busch connected for his 26th home run last night as he had now exceeded 20+ home runs in all three of his minor league seasons. He’s hit .322/.426/.613 this year as he shows skills far too advanced for Triple-A pitching.
Emmanuel Rodriguez, OF, Twins: Cedar Rapids played a doubleheader with Great Lakes for the Midwest League Championship on Wednesday night. In the deciding game three, Rodriguez connected for his third home run of the playoffs as he helped lead the Kernels to a Midwest League title. Rodriguez faced a rough patch in the early part of the season but turned a corner in June, performing well over the second half of the season. Still one of the best combinations of power and on-base ability.
